DESCRIPTION :-


A Graphic Representation of the same was adopted as official emblem of India.


Discovery -

It was discovered from Sarnath near Varanasi. It was. Built in commemoration of the historical event of the first sermon of the Dharma chakra pravartna by Buddha at Sarnath.
The Capital was built by Mauryan king Ashoka.


Its Length is 7 feet (approx 2.15 meter). The Capital is carved out of a single block of polished sandstone and was always a separate piece from the column itself. It features four Asiatic Lions standing bqck to back.


The Capital originally consisted of 5 components.

1) The shaft made of rocks but broken in many parts now.

2) A Lotus belt base.

3) A Drum on the Belt base with four animals proceeding clockwise.

4) The figures of four majestic addorsed lions which are sticking their backs and facing four different direction - East, West, North and South.

5) The crowning elements, Dharma chakra, a large wheel is lying in broken condition in the site museum of Sarnath and now this symbol is used in the middle of the Indian National Flag with dark blue colour as National Emblem of Independent India.
